WhatsApp Introduces Stronger Password Option for Two-Step Verification

WhatsApp is rolling out a significant update to its account security system by replacing the current six-digit PIN used in two-step verification with a more complex password option. This new feature, gradually available to users on Android and iPhone devices, allows account protection through a password containing letters and numbers, enhancing security beyond the numeric PIN. The updated password must be at least eight characters long and include at least one letter and one number, making it much harder to guess or breach compared to the previous six-digit code.

This change modifies the two-step verification mechanism itself rather than adding an additional security layer. Users who have already enabled two-step verification may be prompted to update their PIN to the new password format once the feature becomes available on their accounts. The option to set the password can be found in WhatsApp settings under Account once the feature is activated.

WhatsApp is deploying this update gradually, so not all users will see the option immediately, even if they have the latest app version. The company has not specified when the feature will be universally available. In case users forget their new password, WhatsApp provides a recovery option via an email address linked to the account, allowing users to request a reset link. Users are advised to ensure their recovery email is up to date in their account settings.
