Ohio Authorities Rescue 16 Children Found Locked in Small Room Under Horrific Conditions

Authorities in rural Ohio rescued 16 children, aged between 1.5 and 18 years, who were found locked in a small room under extremely neglected and unsanitary conditions. The children, all from the same family, were discovered during an unrelated search warrant executed by the Winton County Sheriff's Office on July 2, 2026. The investigation revealed that the children had been confined for most of the past four years in a room measuring approximately 3.5 by 3.5 meters, surrounded by human waste and filth.

Four family members, including two parents and two grandparents, were arrested and charged with child endangerment causing serious bodily harm. The suspects, identified as Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, denied the charges in court and were each held on $300,000 bail. Authorities emphasized that this was not a human trafficking case but an internal family matter.

Several children were in critical medical condition; seven were hospitalized locally in Columbus, and two were airlifted to trauma centers. One child required mechanical ventilation. Some children were unable to speak properly, including an 18-year-old with developmental disabilities who could not spell her own name. The home was described as contaminated with bacteria and human feces, with conditions worse than those used for livestock.

The family had moved across multiple counties in southern Ohio over the past two decades, avoiding official medical and government records. None of the children were enrolled in school, and neighbors in the small town of Medan, with fewer than 1,000 residents, were unaware that children lived in the household. Authorities are seeking temporary custody of all 16 children to ensure they receive proper care and protection.

Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson called the scene "pure evil" and the worst he had encountered in his career. Sheriff Ryan Kane highlighted the shocking neglect and vowed justice for the children. Prosecutor William Archer pledged to provide the children with the love and care they deserve moving forward.
