Ohio Authorities Rescue 16 Children Held in Neglectful Conditions for Years
Sixteen children aged between 1.5 and 18 were rescued this week from a rural home in Medan, Vinton County, Ohio, after being held in harsh conditions for most of the past four years. Authorities discovered the children during a search warrant execution related to a separate investigation, with no prior knowledge that children lived in the house. The children were confined to a single small room measuring about 3.5 by 3.5 meters, surrounded by filth and waste. Some were unable to speak or communicate properly, and one 18-year-old with an intellectual disability could not write her name. Several children required urgent medical care, with one in critical condition.
Vinton County Sheriff Ryan Kane described the scene as "disgusting," noting that most animals are kept in better conditions. Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson called the case one of the worst he had seen, saying the children appeared "almost like wild animals." None of the children were enrolled in school, and many had little contact with education, medical, or welfare systems. Four adult family members, Gary Siders Sr., Gary Siders Jr., Christina Siders, and Elizabeth Siders, were arrested and charged with serious child endangerment and severe physical abuse. Each was granted bail set at $300,000.
The isolated home is located near a railroad embankment on a side road, and neighbors reported never seeing children leave the property despite its visibility from the road. Investigators believe the family moved around southern Ohio for years, successfully avoiding government registration. Attorney General Wilson noted the family was "pretty good at hiding these kids." Authorities emphasized that this case is not related to human trafficking but is a severe instance of familial neglect.
