A large forest fire broke out on October 28 in the Ben Shemen area, engulfing significant amounts of brush and tree canopies. The fire rapidly spread towards key transportation arteries, including Highway 444, Highway 1, and Highway 6, according to the Israel Fire and Rescue Services press office. Highway 444 has been completely closed in both directions near the Ben Shemen interchange due to the threat to road safety. Additionally, traffic on Highway 6 northbound has been halted as the fire approaches. Drivers are strongly advised to avoid the area, plan alternative routes, and follow police instructions at the closures.
Significant forces have been deployed to the scene, with 12 fire and rescue crews currently battling the blaze and focusing on containing its spread. Given the difficult terrain and the risk of further propagation, Chief Caspi has ordered the mobilization of additional resources from across the country, with approximately 50 more crews en route from various districts. Firefighting aircraft are also actively involved, with four specialized planes making regular sorties to drop water and fire retardants on the flames in inaccessible forest areas.
