Ahead of election day, Israel's Privacy Protection Authority has issued a strict directive prohibiting party representatives, election committee members, and observers from transferring any information regarding a voter's arrival at a polling station, their act of voting, or real-time voter turnout figures. This clarification follows recent High Court of Justice rulings that deemed the collection and transfer of voter data to parties, whether through digital apps or manual methods, illegal, a violation of privacy, and lacking legal authorization.
The prohibition extends to anonymous statistical data about voter turnout. Furthermore, the authority clarified that party activists and app users must obtain explicit consent from individuals before transferring any personal information about them. The Head of the Privacy Protection Authority, Gilad Semama, emphasized that the authority will enforce these regulations through administrative and criminal measures, including server audits for applications. He reminded the public that intentional privacy violations are a criminal offense punishable by up to five years in prison, in addition to significant financial penalties.
On election day, a dedicated public response center will be operational, and authority representatives will be stationed at the Knesset's election situation room.
