צה"ל ושב"כ הודיעו הבוקר (יום ד') על חיסולו של אחמד בטש, מפקד גדוד ג'באליה בחטיבת צפון הרצועה של הזרוע הצבאית של חמאס, בתקיפה שהתרחשה במהלך הלילה בצפון הרצועה. על פי הודעתם המשותפת, בטש היה אחראי על ניהול וארגון אמצעי הלחימה של החטיבה, קידם מתווי טרור נגד כוחות צה"ל ואזרחים ישראלים, ופעל לשיקום יכולות הארגון תוך הפרה שיטתית של הפסקת האש. עוד נמסר כי לפני התקיפה ובמהלכה ננקטו צעדים למניעת פגיעה באזרחים, כולל שימוש בחימוש מדויק ותצפיות מהאוויר.
