Israel Railways Lawsuit Threat Sparks Surge in Rival App Downloads

Israel Railways' threat of legal action against the Better Rail app has dramatically boosted its downloads, pushing it to the top of the Google Store charts in Israel. In a single day, downloads jumped from 5,000 to over 10,000, a significant increase from the app's typical 200 weekly downloads. Since the lawsuit threat was publicized, Better Rail has garnered 8,000 new downloads.

Better Rail, a free transportation app offering an alternative to Israel Railways' official application, is accused by the railway company of unauthorized data extraction, violating terms of use, using trade secrets, and causing system crashes and overloads. Israel Railways claims these issues have resulted in hundreds of thousands of shekels in damages.

Despite the surge in popularity, with approximately 10,000 downloads since the threat compared to 5,000 in its five years of existence, Israel Railways continues to demand that Better Rail cease using its interfaces, delete the data, and provide a full breakdown of its data extraction methods.

Better Rail denies the allegations, asserting it is an open-source, non-profit application that has not breached any systems. They claim the railway data was publicly accessible without authentication and have requested Israel Railways present evidence supporting its claims. In response to the dispute, Better Rail has disconnected from Israel Railways' direct systems and is now using data from the Ministry of Transport, though they note this may lead to inaccuracies for passengers.
