Transport App Sees User Surge After Threatening Legal Action by Israel Railways

The transportation app Better Rail reported a significant surge in users, gaining over 5,000 new passengers in the 24 hours following reports that Israel Railways threatened legal action against the app's operators. In a post on X, formerly Twitter, the app's developers thanked the new users and sarcastically thanked Israel Railways for helping them "achieve a dream and reach first place in the app store."

The dispute began when Israel Railways accused Better Rail of accessing its systems without authorization through non-public interfaces. The railway company claimed this unauthorized access caused system overloads, malfunctions, and hundreds of thousands of shekels in expenses. Israel Railways sent a legal notice demanding the app cease access, delete collected data, and remove the application from app stores.

However, Better Rail vehemently denies these claims. The app's operators assert that no systems were breached and that the accessed information was publicly available through standard web requests, requiring no special credentials. They emphasize that Better Rail is an independent, free, ad-free, open-source application not operated for profit.
