Jane Fonda Defends Mark Ruffalo Against Paramount's Antisemitism Allegations

Jane Fonda has publicly defended actor Mark Ruffalo after Paramount accused him of using antisemitic imagery in his criticism of the Allison family and their ties to Israel. The dispute arose following Ruffalo's comments linking the Allison family's media power, including a planned merger with Warner Bros., to their support for Israel and technology provided to the Israeli military. Ruffalo described Larry Allison as a "classic oligarch" and used terms such as "genocide" and "apartheid" in his critique. Paramount responded by expressing concern over the use of antisemitic imagery in what they called a corporate dispute, stating that such language crossed a line.

Fonda, an American Jewish actress and activist, told Variety that false accusations of antisemitism are being used to silence legitimate political criticism. She emphasized that antisemitism is real and dangerous but should not be weaponized against dissenting political views. Fonda, who works with Ruffalo in the Committee for the First Amendment, argued that Paramount is trying to divert attention from the merger itself by labeling Ruffalo's criticism antisemitic. She stressed Ruffalo's First Amendment right to speak out against powerful corporations and the merger, questioning whether such concentration of media power should be allowed.

This controversy began after Ruffalo shared a video featuring Safra Catz, a Paramount board member and Oracle executive, discussing the company's provision of "deeply disturbing" technology to the Israeli Defense Forces following the October 7 attack. Oracle was co-founded by Larry Allison, father of Paramount CEO David Allison. Actress Hannah Einbinder also publicly supported Ruffalo, calling the idea that he attacked the Allison family because they are Jewish "ridiculous" and praising his linking of their technology support for Israel to their media dominance.

The incident has escalated from a specific conflict between Ruffalo and Paramount into a broader Hollywood debate about Israel, antisemitism, and media concentration.
