Meteorological Service Warns of Rare August Rainstorm Across Northern and Central Israel

After a prolonged period of hot and summery weather, the Israeli Meteorological Service has announced that rain is expected to return early next week, affecting large areas in northern and central Israel. This event is highly unusual, as rainfall during August is rare and typically limited to isolated incidents. However, this month has already seen two separate rain events, making the current forecast unprecedented for most regions except a few northern areas.

The updated forecast predicts autumn-like weather conditions from the night between Saturday and Sunday through Sunday morning, with local rainfall expected in the north, center, coastal plain, Shephelah, and some inland areas. In some locations, the rain could be particularly heavy, with double-digit millimeter accumulations, especially by Sunday morning. Such rainfall amounts are extremely rare for both August and September and could break existing seasonal rainfall records in certain areas.

Ariel Sharfer from the Meteorological Service noted that August has been marked by unusual weather patterns, combining higher-than-average temperatures with intense rain events atypical for this season. Long-term forecasts suggest that these August rains are a precursor to the true autumn season, which will bring more significant rainfall events in late September and October. Additionally, a warning has been issued for dangerous sea conditions for swimmers during the last week of August.
