IDF Chief Visits Yeshivat Hesder Yeruham, Highlights Unique Role of Torah and Military Service

IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi conducted a historic visit on Tuesday to Yeshivat Hesder Yeruham, where he met with the yeshiva's leaders, including Rabbis Chaim Wolfson and Uriel Eitam, as well as the heads of the Hesder Yeshivot Association, Uri Pinsky and Eliezer Deutsch. He also met with wounded students and later addressed the yeshiva students in the study hall. The three-hour visit began with a presentation of the yeshiva's memorial wall dedicated to ten students and alumni who fell during Operation Iron Swords, including a moving tribute by the brother of Efraim Yachman, who was killed in combat in Gaza in December 2023.

During his speech, Kochavi emphasized the unique strength and leadership that Hesder Yeshivot provide to the IDF and the nation, stating, "I see in the Hesder Yeshivot leadership, responsibility, and a tremendous enterprise. What comes out of these study halls is the strength and leadership of the people of Israel, and we need this unifying leadership." He highlighted the integration of Torah study and military service as a force multiplier for the IDF, praising the students' dedication to both spiritual and national service.

Rabbis Wolfson and Eitam praised the partnership with the IDF as foundational, describing Torah study and national security as inseparable paths requiring commitment to both learning and meaningful service. They noted the timing of the visit in the month of Elul as significant, underscoring the yeshiva's mission to cultivate individuals devoted to Torah, the people, and the state. The visit reinforced the close bond between the Hesder Yeshivot and the IDF, showcasing the yeshiva’s role in fostering leaders who combine religious dedication with military responsibility.
