Israeli Defense Minister Warns Hamas of Strong Response to Gaza Balloon Attacks, Criticizes Predecessor Galant

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz issued a stern warning to Hamas on Monday, declaring that any continuation of balloon and kite launches from the Gaza Strip toward southern Israeli communities will be met with "powerful actions." Katz emphasized that Israel will adopt a policy of "zero tolerance and zero leniency" regarding these attacks. He stated that both he and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to act accordingly.

Katz equated the threat posed by incendiary balloons and kites to that of drones, regardless of whether they carry explosives. He warned that if the launches persist, Israel will intensify its military response to end the phenomenon.

In addition to addressing Hamas, Katz criticized his predecessor, former Defense Minister Yoav Galant, for the policies in place before the October 7 massacre. Katz asserted he would not allow a return to the previous approach, which he described as permissive toward Hamas's repeated incursions near the border fence. He contrasted his current strategy with what he called Galant's "repetitive raid method," which allegedly allowed Hamas to regain control of certain areas multiple times during the conflict. Katz highlighted that under his leadership, Israel and the IDF have established a security zone with maintained military control to prevent such occurrences.

The statements come amid renewed concerns over Hamas's use of incendiary devices from Gaza, which have sparked fires and heightened tensions in the Negev region. Katz's remarks signal a firm stance by Israel to prevent any escalation and maintain security along the Gaza border.
