Israeli Defense Minister Orders Zero Tolerance on Gaza Balloon and Kite Launches

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has instructed the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) to adopt a zero-tolerance policy toward the launching of balloons and kites from the Gaza Strip into southern Israeli communities. Katz equated these devices with drones, whether or not they carry explosives, and warned that if the launches continue, Israel will take strong measures to end the phenomenon. He emphasized that unlike previous policies, the IDF has established a secure buffer zone free of residents and terror infrastructure to protect soldiers and civilians, preventing Hamas from repeatedly infiltrating the same areas as had occurred before.

Katz also criticized former Defense Minister Yoav Galant’s approach of repeated raids, which he said allowed Hamas to return to targeted locations. The announcement follows a recent resurgence of balloon and kite launches reminiscent of the period before the horrific Simchat Torah massacre. In response, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Katz held a security briefing with IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir and other senior officials to discuss the threat posed by drones, balloons, and kites from Gaza.

Netanyahu and Katz jointly warned Hamas that if the launches do not stop immediately, the IDF will intensify efforts to neutralize those responsible and evacuate populations from areas used for these attacks. Hamas spokesman Hazem Qassem denied responsibility, dismissing the devices as "children’s toys" and accused Israel of using the claims to justify ongoing aggression and violations. Qassem also claimed that Israel controls 70% of Gaza’s territory and that the threats are a pretext for continued Israeli offenses.

Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will not return to the security situation before October 7 and will not allow Hamas or any other Gaza factions to threaten Israeli communities or undermine citizens’ sense of security.
