IDF Strikes Vehicle Near Damascus Amid Rising Tensions With Turkey

Syrian media reported that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) attacked a vehicle using a drone near the village of Beit Jinn in the Damascus countryside. No further details about this specific incident have been released. This report comes during a tense week following an unusual Israeli strike on Syrian territory at the Abu al-Duhur military airport in Idlib. That attack caused significant damage to runways and facilities and was reportedly carried out due to intelligence indicating Turkey's intention to deploy forces at the site.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the recent strike, warning against Turkish military entrenchment southward, near Aleppo. He stated, "We will not tolerate Turkish military establishment moving south because it threatens us, and we have made this clear. We saw Turkey's intention to establish itself at an airfield south of its line, near Aleppo, and sent a message, Don't. The message was sent, but apparently not heard. So we made sure they understood."

Meanwhile, Tom Barrett, U.S. envoy to Syria and ambassador to Turkey, suggested in an interview that Israel's recent aggressive strike might be intended to provoke a Turkish military response. He noted that such a move could be politically motivated ahead of elections, referencing Turkey's past downing of a Russian plane in 2015 as an example of potentially irrational decision-making during election periods.

Tensions further escalated when Turkey requested Interpol to issue a Red Notice against Prime Minister Netanyahu for alleged genocide related to the Gaza flotilla incident. Turkish Justice Minister Akın Örüç confirmed this request, linking it to an existing arrest warrant issued on July 14 and ongoing legal proceedings in Turkey.
