Israeli Children Hospitalized After Eating Egyptian Falafel Made From Fava Beans

Two Israeli children returning from vacations in Egypt were hospitalized in serious condition after consuming local falafel made entirely from fava beans rather than chickpeas. The first case involved a 12-year-old boy admitted to Rambam Hospital about a week and a half ago with jaundice, dark urine, and severe anemia. Although his family was aware of a G6PD enzyme deficiency in relatives, they did not know the boy himself was sensitive and insisted he had not eaten fava beans. Medical staff discovered the Egyptian falafel contained only fava beans, a fact unknown to the family.

A few days later, an 8-year-old boy was treated for acute hemolysis after eating the same type of falafel. His family knew he was sensitive to fava beans and had tried to avoid exposure but were unaware the falafel contained them. This boy required a blood transfusion during hospitalization. His 2-year-old brother also consumed a small amount and showed low hemoglobin but did not need admission.

Dr. Reizi Gruda-Zussman explained that people with G6PD deficiency lack an enzyme protecting red blood cells from oxidative damage. Exposure to fava beans can cause rapid red blood cell breakdown, leading to anemia, jaundice, and dark urine, especially dangerous in young children. Treatment often requires hospitalization and sometimes blood transfusions. Dr. Gruda-Zussman emphasized the importance of knowing food ingredients, particularly when sensitivities exist, both abroad and in Israel.

These cases highlight the significant differences in falafel recipes between Israel and Egypt and the potential health risks for vulnerable individuals unaware of these variations.
