Chabad House in Sri Lanka Faces Local Attacks, Israeli MK Urges Foreign Ministry Action

The Chabad House in Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka, which opened about a month ago, has come under attack amid local protests. Over the past weekend, firecrackers and stones were thrown at the Chabad compound, and Israelis attending Shabbat meals there faced harassment and threats. The unrest stems from demonstrations by local residents and Buddhist monks demanding the closure of the Chabad House, escalating tensions in the area.

In response, Israeli Member of Knesset Avi Maoz, chairman of the Noam party, urgently appealed to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar to intervene swiftly with Sri Lankan authorities. Maoz warned of the risk of casualties and stressed the need to ensure the safety of Chabad emissaries and Israeli visitors. He highlighted the vital role Chabad Houses play worldwide, especially where Israel lacks official representation, serving as key support centers for Israelis and Jews abroad.

Maoz called on the Israeli government to do everything possible to protect Chabad emissaries and enable them to continue their important work securely. The Foreign Ministry has yet to publicly respond to the request. The situation remains tense as local opposition to the Chabad House continues, raising concerns about the safety of Israelis in the region.
