Chabad House in Sri Lanka Attacked Amid Local Protests, Israeli MP Urges Urgent Intervention

A Chabad House in Hiriketiya, Sri Lanka, which opened just a month ago, faced a tense weekend as firecrackers and stones were thrown at the premises. Israeli visitors attending Shabbat meals at the site encountered harassment and threats. The attacks coincided with local protests by residents and Buddhist monks demanding the closure of the Chabad House, escalating tensions around the center that serves Israeli and Jewish visitors in the area.

In response to the incidents, Israeli Member of Knesset Avi Maoz, chairman of the Noam party, urgently appealed to Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar to intervene swiftly with Sri Lankan authorities. Maoz warned of the risk of the situation deteriorating and stressed the importance of ensuring the safety of Chabad emissaries and Israelis before any casualties occur. He highlighted the vital role Chabad Houses play worldwide, especially in locations lacking official Israeli representation, providing essential support and a central point for Israelis abroad.

Maoz emphasized Israel’s responsibility to protect Chabad emissaries and enable them to continue their important work securely. The Foreign Ministry has yet to announce any specific measures following the appeal. The incident underscores growing local opposition to the Chabad presence in the region and raises concerns about the security of Jewish institutions in Sri Lanka.
