Olympic Medalist Oren Smadja Joins Gilad Erdan's Unity Party Ahead of 2026 Elections

Oren Smadja, former Olympic bronze medalist and ex-head coach of Israel's men's judo team, announced his entry into politics by joining the Unity Party led by Gilad Erdan. Smadja, who tragically lost his son Omer in combat in the Gaza Strip, said his decision was driven by a strengthened belief in the importance of national unity above political divisions. He emphasized that after receiving multiple political offers, he chose Erdan's party because he trusts Erdan's leadership and his vision of responsible right-wing politics that insists on universal service to the state as a foundation for unity.

Smadja praised Erdan's extensive experience as a Knesset member, minister in Israeli governments, and ambassador to the US and UN, highlighting his dedication to representing Israel and defending its reputation internationally. In response, Erdan welcomed Smadja, describing him as a symbol of Israel's resilience and honor, and expressed confidence that Smadja would strengthen the Unity Party's mission to promote genuine right-wing values, enforce national conscription, and form a broad Zionist government ahead of the 2026 elections.
