Israeli Family's Dispute With Tuk-Tuk Driver Sparks Controversy in Phuket, Thailand

A confrontation between an Israeli family and a tuk-tuk driver in Phuket, Thailand, has ignited a social media and local media uproar. The incident, captured on video by the driver, shows a heated argument during which one Israeli family member insults the driver in English and Hebrew, calling him "you scum." The driver claims the family threatened and attempted to attack him, though these claims have not been independently verified.

According to the Thai news site The Thaiger and Phuket Times, the dispute began when the family asked the driver about the fare but failed to agree on a price. The driver then waited for other passengers. Later, an Australian couple arrived and booked a ride to Bangla, a popular nightlife area in Phuket. When the Israeli family tried to join the ride, the driver refused and directed them to another tuk-tuk nearby, which escalated the argument. The driver alleges the family tried to block the Australian couple from leaving and that he intervened to protect his passengers.

The video shows five people, reportedly the Israeli family, standing by the tuk-tuk, with one repeatedly cursing the driver and spitting on the road. The driver states he refused to transport passengers behaving this way and left the scene. He also says one family member attempted to lift a heavy concrete slab to attack him but failed. The driver shared the video to condemn the family's behavior, which he deemed inappropriate for Thailand's tourist sites.

No response has been reported from the Israeli family, nor is it known if the driver filed a police complaint or contacted tourism authorities. The Israeli embassy in Thailand has urged tourists to respect local culture, following previous incidents involving Israeli tourists that strained relations with locals and authorities. In February 2025, the embassy issued guidelines advising Israelis to avoid conduct that could harm their image. Israeli Ambassador Orna Sagiv also visited Pai in northern Thailand with Thai officials to ease tensions after reports of businesses refusing service to Israeli tourists.
