Five-Year-Old Ian Abu Amar Drowns in Public Pool; Family Calls for Safety Reforms

Ian Munir Abu Amar, a five-year-old boy from the Bedouin village of Lakiya, tragically drowned last week in a public swimming pool in Omer. According to his father, Munir, the lifeguard on duty was distracted by his mobile phone and failed to notice Ian struggling in the deep water. The family’s allegations are still under investigation. Ian was rushed to Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba and treated in the pediatric intensive care unit, but his condition worsened and he passed away.

The family made the difficult decision to donate Ian’s organs, which saved the lives of two children awaiting kidney transplants, a 10-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy. Additionally, Ian’s corneas and heart valves are expected to be transplanted to other patients. Munir described the heartbreaking day, explaining that Ian had been playing in the shallow end before moving to the deep water near the lifeguard’s station. The lifeguard did not look up from his phone, and Ian began to drown until a mother nearby noticed and pulled him out. Despite immediate resuscitation efforts and emergency medical care, Ian did not survive.

Munir is calling for a review of safety protocols at public pools, suggesting that lifeguards should be required to surrender their phones during shifts to prevent future tragedies. He emphasized that Ian’s death should lead to changes that protect other children. Ian’s grandfather, Mohammed Abu Amar, also criticized the rescue services’ negligence. The Omer local council expressed condolences and stated that the pool is operated by the Omer Country Club under proper licensing and safety regulations. The council is cooperating fully with authorities investigating the incident but refrained from further comment pending the investigation’s outcome.
