Trump's Location Hidden Using Air Force One Decoy Amid Iran Threats

In July 2023, a rare deception operation was conducted to conceal U.S. President Donald Trump's whereabouts due to credible intelligence of an Iranian threat against him or his aircraft. Following the NATO summit in Ankara on July 8, Trump secretly flew from Turkey to the UK on a smaller military plane, a C-32A, while the traditional Air Force One, a Boeing 747, took off without him as a decoy. This ruse was kept secret not only from the public and journalists but also from many White House officials and senior U.S. government members.

The deception began before takeoff, with Trump publicly boarding the old Air Force One to mislead observers. Minutes later, he and some aides exited covertly via a catering truck, which concealed their movement to the nearby C-32A. Defense Secretary Pete Gossuth also participated openly by boarding the C-32A separately to maintain the illusion of a standard government flight. Meanwhile, journalists and other officials boarded the 747 unaware that Trump was not aboard. The C-32A flew under a generic military call sign, and tracking systems were disabled to hide its flight path, unlike the decoy 747 which was tracked normally.

The operation was prompted by intelligence warnings, including from Israel, about a credible Iranian plot to target Trump’s plane. The threat emerged shortly after the U.S. began renewed strikes on Iran following failed negotiations. The new Boeing 747-8 gifted by Qatar, which Trump had recently started using, lacked some missile detection and countermeasure systems present on the older Air Force One planes, raising security concerns. Consequently, Trump reverted to using the older plane temporarily while the new one undergoes upgrades.

The White House initially misled the public by stating Trump had flown on the old Air Force One, although he had actually traveled on the C-32A. Trump later addressed the media during the flight back to Washington, acknowledging the Iranian threat but not revealing the deception. This operation was unprecedented in its secrecy and scale compared to past instances where presidential movements were concealed but not falsified. The Iranian threat against Trump has been ongoing, linked to retaliation for the killing of Qassem Soleimani and foiled assassination plots involving Iranian operatives in the U.S.
