Israeli Border Police Arrest Two Suspects Stealing Over a Ton of Watermelons Near Ein HaMifratz

On August 5, Israeli Border Police from the Coastal Settlements Unit arrested two suspects caught stealing more than 1,014 kilograms (over a ton) of watermelons from farmland near Ein HaMifratz. The operation followed a farmer's report that a large flock of sheep had trespassed on his land, causing significant crop damage. Upon arrival, the Border Police observed the suspects picking watermelons and loading them into a vehicle. They also found a flock of approximately 300 sheep, believed to have been brought by one of the suspects, which further damaged the crops.

The suspects were detained on the spot, and a search of their vehicle confirmed the large quantity of stolen watermelons. The initial damage estimate to the farmer's produce reached thousands of shekels, factoring in both the stolen fruit and the harm caused by the sheep. One suspect was identified as a Palestinian resident staying in Israel without a permit, while the other is suspected of employing and transporting him, as well as of trespassing with the sheep and theft.

Authorities issued a 150,000 shekel administrative fine to the sheep owner for the trespassing. The vehicle used in the theft was also confiscated. Following investigation by the Border Police's central unit, indictments were filed against both suspects. The Border Police emphasized their ongoing efforts to combat agricultural crime to protect farmers and their produce from theft and damage.
