Israeli Deputy Mayor and Family Face Possible Charges in Bribery and Corruption Case

The Israeli Tax and Economic Prosecution announced on Monday that it is considering indicting Yossi Azriel, deputy and acting mayor of Kiryat Bialik, his two sons Tom and Ben Azriel, real estate companies, and other officials on suspicions of bribery, breach of trust, and money laundering. This follows a lengthy undercover investigation by the National Fraud Investigations Unit (Yahch"a) in Lahav 433, in cooperation with the Tax Authority and the Anti-Money Laundering Authority. The probe became public in March 2022 when Azriel, his sons, and several businessmen were arrested.

The allegations state that between 2018 and 2022, while Azriel held multiple public roles including chair of the local planning and building committee and positions in municipal corporations, he exploited his authority to maintain ongoing contacts with developers and professionals, facilitating contractors and interested parties in exchange for personal benefits to himself and his family. From 2019 until the arrests in 2022, Azriel and his sons allegedly advanced private economic interests through the establishment and active management of a company called "Retav," which served as a platform for receiving favors from developers operating under the committee's jurisdiction.

The investigation also examined suspicions of fraud, money laundering, and additional tax offenses, including the use of management and advertising companies to transfer funds and commissions. These allegations add to previous critical reports by the State Comptroller highlighting serious and ongoing deficiencies in integrity and proper administration within the local planning committee. Following the prosecution's announcement, the suspects are expected to present their defenses during a hearing before a final decision on indictments is made.
