Suspected Ebola Case Isolated in Israel After Return from Congo

Israeli health authorities reported a suspected Ebola case involving a person who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The individual developed a fever and is currently isolated and receiving treatment at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba. The Ministry of Health emphasized that this is only a suspicion at this stage, with laboratory tests underway and results expected within 24 hours. A comprehensive epidemiological investigation is also in progress to identify any potential contacts.

Soroka Medical Center is designated as one of the specialized facilities for treating suspected cases of highly contagious diseases like Ebola, following the Ministry of Health's systemic preparedness plans. The DRC has been experiencing a severe Ebola outbreak in recent months, with hundreds of confirmed cases and thousands suspected. Neighboring Uganda has also reported infections and has closed its border with the DRC to contain the spread.

The Ministry of Health reiterated that Ebola is not airborne and spreads only through direct contact with symptomatic patients or their bodily fluids such as blood or secretions. It urged the public to avoid non-essential travel to affected regions, particularly the DRC and Uganda. Travelers returning from these areas who develop fever or unusual symptoms within 21 days are advised to stay home, avoid contact with others, and immediately call the health hotline at *5400, informing them of their travel history for proper guidance.

The Ministry continues to monitor the global situation closely and maintains readiness to respond to any potential cases to protect public health in Israel.
