Israel's U20 Water Polo Team Wins Opener at European Championship in Portugal

Israel's under-20 national water polo team started strong at the European Championship Division B in Portugal, defeating Belarus 17-11 in their opening match on August 10, 2026. The Israeli team dominated from the start, winning the first quarter 6-3 and delivering a decisive 5-0 run in the third quarter. Amir Shaprir led the scoring with five goals, followed by Tomer Erezi with four, Kai Mitak and Raz Sharir with three each, and Itai Goshen with two.

Coach Marko Čorić emphasized the team's goal to compete for promotion to Division A while focusing on building a disciplined and resilient squad with a clear identity. He noted that most players were born in 2008 and 2009, making many of them one to three years younger than the tournament's age limit, highlighting the team's potential for future growth.

Regarding their chances in a group that also includes Belgium, the UK, Switzerland, and Ukraine, Čorić expressed confidence, stressing the importance of consistency, mental toughness, and unity throughout the competition. He praised the positive development of Israeli water polo, especially among younger players who are starting training earlier and gaining international experience.

The coach concluded that with proper long-term planning and investment in youth, Israeli water polo can become more competitive internationally. The U20 team is a key part of this process, aiming not only for immediate success but also to build the sport's future in Israel.
