Maccabi Tel Aviv Reintegrates Forward-Center Shane Hunter for Upcoming Season

Maccabi Tel Aviv officially announced the return of American forward-center Shane Hunter to their roster for the upcoming season after a successful loan spell with Legia Warsaw in Poland. Hunter, 25, who stands 2.08 meters tall, impressed in both the Polish league and the Basketball Champions League, averaging 9.2 points, 5 rebounds, and 1.3 blocks per game in Poland, and 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in the Champions League. He will join newly signed frontcourt players Daniel Theis and Armando Bacot, completing the team's front line.

Coach Oded Katash praised Hunter's versatility, mobility, and efficiency, highlighting his strong off-ball movement, high shooting percentage near the basket, rebounding, and defensive impact. The club expects Hunter to play a significant role in both domestic competitions and the EuroLeague.

However, Hunter's return creates a tactical challenge due to league regulations on "newly naturalized" players. Each Israeli Basketball Premier League team can only register one such player per game, and since Will Rayman also holds this status, Katash will have to decide who to include in the lineup each round. Rayman’s status remains "newly naturalized" until the end of the season because his consecutive seasons in Israel were interrupted by a loan to France. Meanwhile, TJ Leaf is considered a local player as he was born in Israel. Maccabi Tel Aviv may seek an exception from the Basketball Association, but for now, the coach must manage a strict rotation between Hunter and Rayman in domestic league games.

Hunter began his professional career in 2024-25 with the Norrköping Dolphins in Sweden, winning the championship and averaging 14.3 points and 8.6 rebounds. His return to Maccabi Tel Aviv marks a key step in the team’s frontcourt overhaul ahead of the new season.
