Maccabi Tel Aviv Retains Shane Hunter Amid Naturalized Player Registration Dilemma

Maccabi Tel Aviv has finalized its roster for the upcoming season by signing Kiton Wallace and confirming that Shane Hunter will remain with the team. Hunter, a 25-year-old American-Israeli forward standing 2.08 meters tall, was loaned to Legia Warsaw last season, where he contributed to their championship win with averages of 9.2 points and 5.0 rebounds in the domestic league, alongside 8.8 points and 6.5 rebounds in the FIBA Champions League.

Hunter will be registered as a naturalized player, which means he will not occupy a foreign player slot. However, this creates a registration challenge for Maccabi Tel Aviv, as both Hunter and Will Rayman are classified as "new naturalized" players rather than "old naturalized/local players." Israeli league rules allow unlimited registration of old naturalized or local players, but only one new naturalized player can be registered per game.

The distinction between new and old naturalized players depends on criteria such as birthplace in Israel, youth team participation, national team appearances, or three consecutive seasons in the Israeli league. Rayman, who joined Israel in 2021 and was loaned to France during his first season with Maccabi, has not yet met these criteria and thus remains a new naturalized player. His status will upgrade after completing the current season.

Consequently, Maccabi Tel Aviv's coach will face a game-by-game decision on whether to register Hunter or Rayman for each match, as both cannot be listed simultaneously on the game roster. This situation highlights the complexities of player registration rules in the Israeli Basketball Premier League.

The league's regulations also allow teams to appeal to the Basketball Association's exceptions committee, but no such appeal has been reported in this case.
