Criminal Lawyer Indicted for Threatening Extortion in Haifa Suburb

On January 17, 2026, the Israeli State Prosecutor's Office filed an indictment against a 52-year-old criminal defense lawyer in the Magistrate's Court in Rishon LeZion, accusing him of extortion by threats. The case stems from a dispute over unpaid loans totaling tens of thousands of shekels. The lawyer allegedly threatened a former friend and client who had borrowed approximately 50,000 shekels, of which only 30,000 was repaid. Additionally, a relative of the lawyer, Yaniv, lent the complainant about 20,000 shekels in early 2026, which were not repaid either.

According to the indictment, on July 12, the lawyer sent threatening WhatsApp messages to the complainant, including insults and warnings that "some guys" would visit him. The complainant himself sent threatening messages to Yaniv, warning of serious consequences. The lawyer later reassured Yaniv that the complainant's threats should not be taken seriously.

On July 21, the lawyer allegedly instructed two known individuals to go to the complainant's home to intimidate him into repaying the debt. Before their arrival, the lawyer sent messages indicating imminent action, stating "the keys are already in the switch" and "in an hour, guys will be at your house." The two men knocked on the complainant's door while he was home with his nine-year-old son, but left after a few minutes. Despite clear security footage, the two men have not yet been located.

Following the incident, the complainant contacted emergency services, and threatening messages from the lawyer continued. The lawyer admitted during police questioning to sending the messages and requesting the visit, initially claiming it was to check on the complainant's mental state but later attributing it to the complainant's threats against Yaniv. The prosecution argues the lawyer threatened the complainant verbally, in writing, and through actions to coerce repayment.

The prosecution requested the lawyer's detention until the end of proceedings, citing danger, risk of obstructing justice, and influence on witnesses. They emphasized the severity of the case given the defendant's professional status as a criminal lawyer and the audacity of his actions.
