Israeli Police Arrest Man for Threatening Northern Businessman in Extortion Case
A 40-year-old resident of Kafr Kanna was arrested on June 17 following an intensive investigation by the Northern District police for extorting a businessman from northern Israel. The suspect sent threatening messages demanding hundreds of thousands of shekels, warning that if the payment was not made within two days, both the businessman and his brother would suffer harm. He also threatened to increase the demanded sum to one million shekels if the initial amount was not paid promptly.
The case began on June 15 when the businessman reported receiving intimidating messages from known criminal elements in the area, demanding an immediate payment of 350,000 shekels. The suspect’s messages explicitly threatened physical harm to the businessman’s family to pressure him psychologically. Despite the threats, the victim initially refused to comply, prompting the suspect to escalate the threats with a "dynamic threat" strategy, demanding a higher payment within 48 hours.
The police responded swiftly with covert operations and advanced technological tools to track the digital sources of the threats. Within two days, they apprehended the suspect, who was surprised by the arrest. The Northern District Prosecutor’s Office filed a detailed indictment against him and requested his detention until the conclusion of legal proceedings, citing the risk he poses to the victim and the public.
Israeli police emphasized their ongoing commitment to combating extortion, violence, and organized crime in the northern region to protect legitimate business owners and dismantle criminal networks.
