Israeli Security Forces Warn of Explosive Drone Threat from Within Israel

Israeli security officials have raised concerns about the increasing desire and capability of terrorist organizations to operate explosive drones from within Israeli territory. A security source described acquiring a drone and attaching explosives as "almost as easy as kicking a ball," highlighting the growing complexity and threat of such attacks. This development follows previous drone threats from Lebanon and Gaza, with fears now extending to attacks launched from inside Israel.

Discussions within the defense establishment, including meetings led by Defense Minister Israel Katz, acknowledge that there is currently no effective operational solution to counter the threat posed by explosive drones. The use of drones equipped with fiber optic guidance systems from Israeli cities marks a new and more sophisticated phase in drone warfare.

In late May, the Israeli military began testing technological measures against drone threats, initially deploying experimental systems in Lebanon aimed at detection and early warning. Last month, Israeli authorities considered imposing a comprehensive ban on drone flights over Israeli airspace due to concerns that Iran might use drones in an attack. The dual rationale for this potential ban is the absence of a reliable technological countermeasure and the risk of increased drone use by Iran, Hezbollah, and other groups, possibly from within Israel's borders, especially in the event of escalation.
