Iran and Oman have reportedly reached an agreement to regulate maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, according to American media reports on August 7, 2026. The proposed arrangement would have vessels entering the Persian Gulf navigate through Iran's territorial waters, while those exiting would pass closer to Omani waters. An Iranian official also indicated ongoing discussions about establishing a joint coordination center.

Despite this development, Iran continues to link the resumption of free navigation in the strait to concessions from the United States. Tehran demands an end to the US naval blockade of Iranian ports, relief from sanctions, and the renewal of talks regarding frozen Iranian assets.
