70-Year-Old Man Dies From West Nile Virus as Infected Mosquitoes Spread in Central Israel

A 70-year-old man in Israel has died from complications related to the West Nile virus after developing symptoms in mid-July and being hospitalized. Since the beginning of 2026, ten cases of the disease have been diagnosed in Israel, with three patients currently hospitalized in stable condition. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing to determine the source of infection.

For the first time this season, mosquitoes carrying the virus have been trapped in central Israel, including in Tel Aviv, Tayibe, Tira, Kalansawa, and the Lev HaSharon Regional Council. Previously, infected mosquitoes had only been found in southern Israel. In response, the Ministry of Environmental Protection has instructed local authorities in these areas to immediately intensify mosquito control, monitoring, and public education efforts.

West Nile virus is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, particularly from mosquitoes that feed on infected birds. The risk of severe illness, such as encephalitis or meningitis, is higher among people aged 60 and above and those with underlying health conditions. Prof. Sigal Sadetzki, head of the Public Health Division at the Ministry of Health, emphasized the importance of preventive measures, noting that most cases are mild or asymptomatic but severe symptoms can occur.

Dr. Shay Reicher, head of the Pest Control Division at the Ministry of Environmental Protection, highlighted the role of the public in reducing mosquito breeding sites by eliminating standing water and using approved repellents. The ministries have issued guidelines urging residents to drain standing water, use mosquito repellents containing DEET, wear long light-colored clothing during peak mosquito activity, install window screens, and report mosquito nuisances or standing water to local authorities via hotline 106.

The West Nile virus season in Israel typically runs from June through November, coinciding with warmer weather and increased mosquito populations. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely to prevent further spread and protect public health.
