Israel Conducts Planned Arrow Missile Defense System Test Over Southern Coastal Plain

The Israeli Ministry of Defense announced on Wednesday evening that it conducted a pre-planned test of the Arrow missile defense system in cooperation with the Israel Defense Forces and Israel Aerospace Industries. The test involved launching an interceptor missile, whose contrail was visible over the southern coastal plain, including Ashdod, where it caused alarm among beachgoers. In July 2025, following increased use of Arrow interceptors during Operation "With the Lion," the Ministry of Defense's Director-General, retired Major General Amir Baram, signed an order to significantly accelerate the production of Arrow interceptors by Israel Aerospace Industries. The Arrow system is designed to intercept ballistic threats outside and at the edge of the atmosphere, providing Israel with strategic long-range defense capabilities. It is regarded as one of the most advanced air defense systems globally, incorporating breakthrough technologies.

The Arrow system consists of two components with distinct capabilities: Arrow 2 and Arrow 3. Arrow 3 is a two-stage interceptor that destroys long-range ballistic targets outside the atmosphere at altitudes up to approximately 100 kilometers and ranges up to 2,400 kilometers through direct impact. Arrow 2 serves as the second defense layer, intercepting ballistic missiles inside the atmosphere, typically up to 100 kilometers in altitude and 1,500 kilometers in range. The American THAAD system has similar capabilities, intercepting missiles at altitudes of 100 to 150 kilometers and ranges up to 300 kilometers, sometimes during the missile's boost phase.
