Hapoel Tel Aviv Signs Douglas Awusu in Club's Most Expensive Transfer

Hapoel Tel Aviv officially signed 20-year-old Ghanaian forward Douglas Awusu to a four-year contract, marking the most expensive acquisition in the club's history. The transfer, valued between 2.2 and 2.5 million euros, was completed after Awusu passed comprehensive medical examinations. Awusu joins from Red Star Belgrade, where he was acquired in January after a strong start to the previous season at Radnik Surdulica, scoring seven goals in 20 appearances. At Red Star Belgrade, he added two goals in 13 appearances and won a domestic double.

The deal was facilitated by a creative debt offset arrangement involving a roughly 2 million euro debt Red Star owed Hapoel Tel Aviv for the transfer of Louizos Louizo, who moved in the opposite direction this summer. Awusu will wear jersey number 35 and is expected to be one of the highest earners on the team. He is known for his dribbling skills, explosive speed, and tactical versatility, capable of playing across the attack, including the right wing and the number 10 position, fitting into coach Aliniv Breda's tactical plans.

Awusu had nearly transferred to Czech club Viktoria Plzen in May for 3.3 million euros, but the move fell through due to failed medical tests. Hapoel Tel Aviv ensured thorough medical checks before finalizing the signing. Awusu expressed excitement about joining the club and praised the passionate fan base, stating his commitment to fighting for the team. He is expected to join the squad ahead of the Europa Conference League playoff match against Katowice.
