Israeli Lawyer Arrested for Smuggling Suspected Cocaine to Prisoner During Visit

A lawyer from Beit Shemesh was arrested on Tuesday night on suspicion of attempting to smuggle 30 pills suspected to be cocaine to a prisoner during a jail visit. The prisoner had recently been detained in a well-known fraud case. Security footage captured the lawyer hugging the inmate and discreetly passing him a bag containing the pills, which became a key piece of evidence in the investigation. The arrest was carried out in a joint operation by the Shdot police station in the Central District and the Israel Prison Service.

Following the incident, the suspected drugs were seized and sent for forensic testing. Both the prisoner and the lawyer were interrogated; the prisoner provided his version of events, while the lawyer denied the allegations at this stage. After the investigation, the lawyer was remanded in custody and is expected to be brought to court on Wednesday for a remand extension hearing.

Deputy Commander Yossi Doron of the Prison Service's YAMAR unit stated that efforts are ongoing to close all channels used for smuggling drugs into prisons, including drones, visitors, and garbage compactors, which were recently exploited in a similar attempt. Doron emphasized that when lawyers, who are part of the law enforcement system, are suspected of abusing their position to smuggle drugs, it crosses a red line. He noted that two lawyers have been arrested in the past two weeks as part of joint enforcement actions, and the authorities will continue to act decisively against all smuggling attempts into prisons.
