Israeli Police Arrest Ashdod Resident Caught With Illegal Firearm During Sting Operation

Israeli police arrested a suspect in Ashdod on suspicion of possessing and trafficking illegal firearms following a targeted undercover operation. The suspect arrived at a secret hideout on an ATV and pulled out a handgun, prompting detectives from the Central Unit (YAMAR Lachish) and Southern District, working with the Special Patrol Unit, to immediately apprehend him on the spot. The arrest concluded weeks of covert intelligence gathering in the southern district, where officers tracked the suspect’s movements and waited for the right moment to act.

During the operation, police confiscated the handgun and also seized the ATV used by the suspect to reach the location. The suspect was taken for interrogation to determine the purpose of the firearm and any links to other criminal activities in the area. The Southern District has recently intensified efforts to combat illegal weapons trafficking, which fuels violent crime including extortion and gang-related violence.

YAMAR Lachish commander Deputy Superintendent Shahar Levi emphasized the priority given to fighting illegal arms possession and trafficking. He credited precise intelligence and operational work for enabling police to prevent harm to the public by intercepting weapons and arresting suspects before incidents occur. Levi reaffirmed the police’s commitment to using all available tools to ensure community safety and combat armed crime.
