Israeli Police Arrest Ashdod Resident in Sting Operation for Illegal Firearm Possession

Israeli police arrested a suspect in Ashdod on suspicion of possessing and trafficking illegal firearms following a targeted undercover operation. The suspect arrived at a secret hideout on an ATV and pulled out a handgun, prompting detectives from the Central Unit (YAMAR Lachish) and YAMAR South, working closely with the Special Patrol Unit, to immediately apprehend him on the spot.

The arrest came after weeks of covert intelligence gathering in the southern district, where officers tracked the suspect’s movements and waited for the right moment to act. Upon the suspect’s arrival at the hideout, police forces in ambush swiftly subdued and detained him without allowing escape. The handgun was seized, and the ATV used to reach the location was also confiscated under policies targeting tools used in criminal arms trafficking.

The suspect, an Ashdod resident, was taken for interrogation to determine the purpose of the firearm possession, its intended recipient, and any links to other criminal activities in the area. This arrest adds to a series of recent operations by the southern district aimed at disrupting illegal arms trade, which fuels serious crime including violent disputes, extortion, and intimidation.

Lachish District Commander Deputy Superintendent Shahar Levy emphasized the police’s commitment to combating illegal weapons offenses as a top priority. He highlighted that precise intelligence and operational actions enable the police to prevent harm by intercepting weapons and suspects before violence occurs. The police pledged to continue using all available means to ensure public safety and fight armed crime in the region.
