Israel's National AI Headquarters Launches Initial Steps in National AI Program
Israel's National AI Headquarters, in collaboration with the Accountant General's Division of the Ministry of Finance, has launched the first three initiatives under the country's National AI Program. Announced on Tuesday, these steps include the publication of tenders and requests for information (RFI) aimed at establishing key technological infrastructures in quantum computing, Physical AI, and foundational AI models.
The "Nexus Project" involves a tender to build a national quantum computing platform, designed to create an Israeli quantum computer that supports existing technologies and strengthens Israel's global standing in this field. Concurrently, an early RFI was issued to explore the creation of a national Physical AI testing field, intended as a center for real-world simulations across diverse environments such as roads, medical facilities, advanced manufacturing, and agriculture. This initiative aims to advance robotics, edge computing, sensors, and data processing.
The third initiative is an RFI to define national strategies for foundational AI models, focusing on mapping market capabilities, assessing Israel's relative advantages, and reinforcing the country's technological sovereignty in this critical strategic infrastructure.
Erez Eskal, head of the National AI Headquarters and retired Brigadier General, emphasized that Government Decision 4255 aims to position Israel at the forefront of global AI development. He highlighted the transition from strategic vision to practical implementation alongside government partners, underscoring the importance of securing sovereign infrastructures and leveraging Israel's unique strengths for long-term global leadership.
Evyatar Peretz, Senior Deputy Accountant General for Innovation and Technology and chair of the special tender committee, noted that the collaboration between the Accountant General's Division and the National AI Headquarters enables the translation of government decisions into actionable mechanisms and tenders. He stated these initiatives will provide industry and the economy with essential infrastructures, reduce barriers, and enhance technological sovereignty.
