Israel Launches National Quantum Computing and Physical AI Initiatives to Boost Global Tech Leadership
Israel's National AI Headquarters at the Prime Minister's Office, in collaboration with the Treasury's Accountant General Division, has announced a series of initiatives to advance the country's national programs in quantum computing and artificial intelligence (AI). The first flagship projects include "Project Nexus," a tender to establish a national blue-and-white quantum computing platform, and two calls for proposals to develop physical AI infrastructures and AI models.
Quantum computing uses qubits that can exist in multiple states simultaneously, enabling the processing of millions of possibilities at once, unlike classical computers. Physical AI focuses on systems that understand and interact with the physical world in real time, such as humanoid robots and smart vehicles, integrating learning models with sensors and actuators.
The special tender committee approved the publication of these tenders and calls, aiming to secure Israel's technological growth engines, sovereignty, and global leadership in the coming years. Establishing a national quantum computer is expected to solidify Israel's position as a world leader and support various domestic technologies.
Additionally, the physical AI initiative includes creating a "national experimental field" to serve as an international center for real-world simulations in diverse environments like roads, medical facilities, advanced manufacturing, and agriculture. The AI headquarters also issued an early request for information to map market capabilities and explore strategies for leveraging Israel's comparative advantages in foundational AI models.
Erez Eskal, head of the National AI Headquarters, emphasized the swift transition from vision and strategy to practical implementation with government partners, highlighting the importance of securing sovereign infrastructures and maintaining Israel's global leadership. The race for quantum computing is critical globally, as powerful quantum computers can break current encryption protecting banks, critical infrastructure, and military communications, while also enabling unhackable communication networks. Physical AI is poised to transform sectors including healthcare, transportation, logistics, and agriculture through advanced robotics and autonomous systems.
