Israel's National AI Headquarters Seeks Public Input to Define Key Challenges for AI Solutions

The National Artificial Intelligence Headquarters, operating under the Prime Minister's Office and led by Brigadier General (res.) Erez Askel, has launched a public call to gather input from the general public, business sector, academia, and entrepreneurs. The goal is to identify the most urgent national challenges that AI technologies could effectively address. This initiative is part of establishing a National AI Institute with an investment of tens of millions of shekels.

Currently, the headquarters focuses on identifying and defining key problems and gaps rather than developing technological solutions. Collected proposals will be used for in-depth mapping and focus groups, from which flagship challenges will be selected for advancement. This effort aligns with a broader government-approved national plan aimed at technological independence, including building computing infrastructure targeting 100,000 processing units, developing a national quantum computer, preparing for labor market changes, and concentrating efforts on Cyber AI and Physical AI.

The state will provide necessary data, computing power, and processing resources, and once market-ready products emerge, it will be the first customer to implement them in public services. Officials say this initiative could position Israel as a global leader in AI, with ongoing discussions with other countries interested in acquiring these solutions.

The AI headquarters operates with about 20 employees, all from the private sector with deep AI expertise, aiming to bypass typical government bureaucracy and work at a business pace. The government has allocated a substantial budget of 3 billion shekels for the first year to support this effort.
