Medica Rafael Hospital Resumes Limited Surgeries Under Health Ministry Oversight

Two weeks after the Israeli Ministry of Health ordered the closure of all operating rooms at Medica Rafael Hospital due to deficiencies and staff shortages, four operating rooms have partially reopened under strict restrictions and supervision. The initial closure followed an inspection that revealed problems in sterilization processes, including cleaning, disinfecting, and supplying sterile surgical instruments, as well as a significant shortage of qualified medical and nursing staff required for operating room procedures.

The Ministry of Health emphasized that any disruption in the sterilization chain could increase the risk of post-surgical infections. The shortage of personnel was also noted to potentially cause procedural delays and errors. Following the inspection, the Ministry mandated a complete halt to surgical activities while other hospital services continued. The Ministry did not disclose how many surgeries were postponed or how many patients had to be rescheduled during the shutdown.

During the two-week suspension, the hospital management addressed the identified issues, improved work processes, and presented corrective actions to the Ministry. After reviewing these measures, the Ministry approved the partial reopening of four operating rooms exclusively for major surgeries. This reopening does not represent a full lifting of the closure order but a gradual, monitored resumption of surgical activity under new limitations.

The hospital's board and management committed to fully comply with licensing conditions, cease unauthorized activities, and implement all professional requirements arising from the inspection. The Ministry of Health stressed that it will continue regular inspections at Medica Rafael and other hospitals to ensure compliance with licensing standards and patient safety.
