Handyman Offers Affordable Acrylic Paint Fix for Moldy Shower Grout

Black mold lines between shower tiles often lead homeowners to consider costly grout replacement. However, handyman Roi Wilker proposes a simple, inexpensive solution using acrylic paint costing about 60 shekels. His method involves spraying an anti-mold agent, waiting 30 minutes without rinsing, then applying acrylic wall paint over the grout lines with a thin brush. Excess paint on tiles is wiped off while still wet with a damp cloth or fine sandpaper, and the area is left to dry for 24 hours before use.

Wilker explains that acrylic grout and paint share similar components, allowing the paint to bond well and refresh the grout’s appearance without the need for expensive removal and replacement, which can cost up to 2,000 shekels for a shower. He advises matching the paint color closely to the existing grout to avoid visible differences, noting that slight variations in shades of white, gray, or black are usually unnoticeable due to the narrow grout lines.

If mold persists after the first application, the process can be repeated. Wilker emphasizes this solution is suitable only for grout, not silicone seals or rubber parts around the shower. He also shares additional household tips, such as using dishwasher tablets to clear drain odors and spraying synthetic grass with diluted fabric softener to eliminate static electricity and add fragrance.

Wilker, who tested these methods extensively in his home in Rishon Lezion, acknowledges some professionals discourage recommending this fix as it reduces their work. Nonetheless, he continues to promote it as a cost-effective, practical alternative for maintaining clean, mold-free bathroom grout.
