Handyman Offers Affordable Acrylic Paint Fix for Moldy Shower Grout

Black mold lines between shower tiles often lead homeowners to consider costly grout replacement. However, handyman Roee Wilker proposes a simple and inexpensive solution using acrylic paint costing about 60 shekels per liter. His method involves spraying an anti-mold agent, waiting 30 minutes without rinsing, then applying acrylic wall paint directly onto the grout lines with a thin brush. Excess paint on tiles is wiped off while still wet with a damp cloth or fine sandpaper, and the area is left to dry for 24 hours before use.

Wilker explains that acrylic grout and paint share similar components, allowing the paint to bond well and refresh the grout’s appearance without the need for expensive re-grouting. He warns that this approach is suitable only if the existing grout is intact and sealed, and it does not apply to silicone or sealing materials around the shower. If mold persists, the process can be repeated. Wilker has tested this method at home for two years with good results.

He advises matching the paint color to the existing grout, typically white, gray, or black, to avoid noticeable differences. Wilker also shares additional household tips, such as using dishwasher tablets to clear shower drain odors and spraying synthetic grass with diluted fabric softener to eliminate static electricity and add fragrance.

Wilker’s approach offers a cost-effective alternative to professional grout replacement, which can cost up to 2,000 shekels for a shower. Despite some professionals discouraging his recommendation due to potential loss of business, Wilker continues to promote the method as a practical and health-conscious solution to mold issues in bathrooms.
