Israeli Election Committee Chair Expresses Concern Over Undermining Attempts

Noam Solberg, chairman of Israel's Election Committee, expressed his concern to Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara about attempts to undermine the committee's credibility. Speaking during a meeting with Baharav-Miara and her team, Solberg emphasized that while there is no real fear of election fraud, the harsh rhetoric could erode public trust in the election results. The meeting followed a series of public statements casting doubt on the committee's reliability. Baharav-Miara affirmed her confidence in the professionalism and dedication of the committee's staff. Both parties issued a joint statement committing to cooperate in enforcing election laws.

This development comes after a confidential discussion last week in the Knesset's Intelligence Subcommittee, attended by Shin Bet chief David Zini. During the session, Knesset member and committee chairman Boaz Bismuth criticized the Election Committee for "questionable appointments." A Shin Bet representative warned that eroding trust in institutions, including the Election Committee, poses a significant security challenge by creating fertile ground for attempts to influence and destabilize confidence in election outcomes. Zini also reassured Solberg that the Shin Bet operates under the committee's authority during elections.
