14 IDF Soldiers Leading Shdem Yemen Base Mutiny Sentenced and Removed from Combat Duty

Fourteen soldiers from the IDF's Givati Brigade who led a mutiny at the Shdem Yemen base were sentenced on Friday to 30 days in military prison and dismissed from combat service. Two additional soldiers involved in the incident returned to base late at night and will face trial later, while one soldier has yet to appear for his trial. The sentences were handed down by Lt. Col. Netanel Shamka, commander of the Givati Brigade.

The mutiny involved about 80 other soldiers who left the base but later returned. These soldiers and their commanders are scheduled to undergo a disciplinary process on the upcoming Saturday to reinforce military order. The unrest began after a dispute between the soldiers and senior command staff over the removal and destruction of symbols displayed in the platoons. According to Givati officers, the battalion commander insisted on dismantling these symbols despite the soldiers' opposition. When no agreement was reached, the soldiers left the unit and fled the base.

Eyewitnesses reported that one commander used a 5-kilogram hammer to destroy one of the symbols. Video footage circulated online showed soldiers shouting insults at officers and command staff as they left the base. Following the departure, battalion commanders contacted the soldiers and their parents via a WhatsApp group, offering leniency to those who returned by 4 p.m. However, only a small number complied by that deadline. Those who returned are awaiting meetings with commanders, while some parents have begun discussions with senior command staff.
