Givati Brigade Commander Condemns Sabra Battalion Mutiny as Serious Breach of IDF Discipline

Following a protest by soldiers of the Sabra Battalion who left the Sde Teyman base in response to their commander’s order to remove certain platoon signs, Givati Brigade Commander Colonel Netanel Shamka issued a letter addressing the incident. While praising the troops for their combat performance and spirit during the recent war, Shamka emphasized that the disciplinary breach is a grave event unacceptable within the IDF and the Givati Brigade. He stressed that IDF values apply both in combat and routine situations, and that there is no tolerance for undermining discipline, command authority, or the core norms that sustain the fighting force.

Colonel Shamka stated the incident will be handled with full seriousness by commanders, balancing responsibility for soldiers with a commitment to uphold clear and uncompromising standards. He highlighted that the brigade’s strength relies on professionalism, camaraderie, discipline, and trust between commanders and soldiers, which must be maintained at all times.

Earlier reports indicated that Sabra Battalion soldiers protested after being ordered to dismantle wooden signs depicting figures like "Satan" and the "Angel of Death," which their commander said symbolized dangerous "training games" that led to harm and humiliation among soldiers. The battalion commander clarified that the signs were not related to memorials or fallen soldiers, contrary to some media claims. He also noted that many soldiers who left the base did so under negative social pressure rather than sound judgment. To facilitate their return, soldiers were given a deadline of 16:00 to come back, with assurances of support for those who comply and consequences for those who do not.

A senior military source later reported a significant number of soldiers had returned to the base. A formal assembly will soon be held to assess the full situation and confirm the number of returning troops.
