IDF's Sabra Battalion Returns Early for Combat Processing After Shdem Yemen Mutiny
Following a recent mutiny at the Shdem Yemen base involving hundreds of fighters from the Givati Brigade, the IDF's Sabra Battalion will cut short its leave and convene for a combat processing seminar in Jerusalem starting Monday. The decision was made by Brigadier General Shagiv Cohen, commander of Division 162, in response to the unrest where soldiers fled the base after a dispute with senior command officers.
The seminar will focus on discussions with organizational consultants and mental health officers to address the soldiers' combat experiences and identify those needing individual support. Tensions remain high between the soldiers and command staff, primarily due to the harsh disciplinary measures imposed after the incident, including the dismissal of fighters and revocation of their combatant certificates, which carry significant post-service benefits.
The mutiny began when command ordered the destruction and removal of symbols displayed in the platoons, a move resisted by the soldiers. The battalion commander reportedly insisted on carrying out the order despite opposition, leading to the mass departure from the base. One commander used a 5-kilogram hammer to destroy a symbol, according to a unit member.
On Saturday night, 14 leading soldiers were sentenced to 30 days in military prison and dismissed from combat service. Two others who led the event returned late and will face trial later, while one soldier has yet to appear. The IDF opted for lighter punishments for 80 other soldiers who left the base but returned.
As of Saturday, the soldiers remained at the base engaging in talks with their commanders, with no final decision on whether they will be allowed home before the Monday seminar or remain for further discussions aimed at easing tensions.
