IDF Supports Battalion Commander Amid Soldier Protest at Shaked Yemen Base

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have expressed full backing for the commander of the Sabra Battalion following a protest by soldiers at the Shaked Yemen base. Approximately 100 of the 120 soldiers who left the base returned after a dispute over the removal of signs linked to the "Young and Old" tradition, which the battalion commander deemed inconsistent with the values of the Givati Brigade. The incident began when the commander ordered an inspection of soldiers' equipment and encountered a locked container with signs the soldiers refused to remove. After the signs were taken down, soldiers left their personal weapons and exited the base in an organized manner. Military officials indicated that the veteran squad, which had not yet returned, led the protest and influenced younger soldiers to follow.

The commander of the 162nd Division, Brigadier General Sagiv Dahan, and the Givati Brigade commander, Colonel Netanel Shamka, visited the base to hold discussions with commanders and soldiers. The IDF plans to differentiate between those who led the protest and those who were swept along, considering disciplinary measures including possible removal from combat roles for some involved. While the IDF supports the decision to address the "Young and Old" phenomenon and remove the signs, it will also investigate the commanders' handling of the situation to understand how the conflict escalated and led to the soldiers' departure.

The battalion commanders have been praised for their courageous leadership in various combat zones over the past three years. The investigation will focus on both the decision to remove the signs and the subsequent management of the soldiers' reaction to ensure such incidents are properly addressed in the future.
