IDF Supports Battalion Commander Amid Soldier Protest at Field Training Base

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have expressed full backing for the commander of the Sabra Battalion following a recent incident at the Shdema Yemen base, where about 100 out of 120 soldiers left the base in protest. The event unfolded after the battalion commander ordered the removal of signs from a locked container that soldiers refused to open during an equipment inspection. These signs, associated with the "Tze'irot-Vetikot" tradition and the Pz'am games, were deemed by the commander to contradict the values of the Givati Brigade.

The soldiers, particularly a veteran platoon that led the protest, left their personal weapons in the company area and departed the base as an organized group. The IDF plans to differentiate between those who led the protest and those who followed, considering disciplinary measures including possible removal from combat roles for some involved.

Major General Shagiv Dahan, commander of the 162nd Division, and Colonel Netanel Shamka, commander of the Givati Brigade, visited the Shdema Yemen base to meet with commanders and soldiers. While the IDF supports the battalion commander's decision to address the "Tze'irot-Vetikot" issue, it will also investigate the handling of the incident, including the escalation that led to the soldiers' departure.

The IDF emphasized that the battalion commanders have bravely led their troops in various combat zones over the past three years. The investigation will assess both the decision to remove the signs and the commanders' management of the situation to prevent future escalations.
