IDF and Soldiers Clash Over Mass Walkout From Givati Brigade Base

A serious disciplinary crisis unfolded at the Givati Brigade's "Tzabar" battalion base in Sde Teyman, where over 100 soldiers and commanders abandoned the base after returning their weapons and equipment and leaving for home. The walkout was triggered by the battalion commander breaking symbolic plaques that represent the unit's heritage and fighting spirit, which deeply offended the soldiers and was described by them as "breaking their spirit." The soldiers claim they have long faced disrespect from some commanders, and this incident was the final straw.

One soldier who led the protest told C14 that during a container roll call, the battalion commander began breaking the plaques, prompting him to confront the commander, who said the plaques distracted from their true mission. The commander later gave an ultimatum to clear the equipment, which the soldiers saw as further disrespect, leading to their mass departure.

In contrast, the battalion commander issued a letter to the soldiers' parents denying any damage to memorials or the memory of fallen soldiers. He said only plaques depicting figures like "the devil" and "angel of death," which he associated with immature gaming culture, were broken. He also claimed many soldiers left due to social pressure rather than independent decisions and urged parents to convince their sons to return.

The IDF described the event as a serious disciplinary issue but emphasized the soldiers' dedication and claimed many had already returned to the base. However, the soldiers vehemently deny this, stating only staff personnel remain and accusing the military of attempting to pressure them psychologically and publicly to end the protest. They say the army is trying to create the false impression that the walkout is dissolving to influence others still off base to return.

The situation remains tense with conflicting narratives between the IDF leadership and the protesting soldiers, and a full assessment of the number of soldiers back at the base is expected after an upcoming roll call.
